Question. Miami, FL - I’ve had this beautiful rust-colored shag carpeting since the late ’60s. It’s real thick and when I vacuum it pulled the threads right out. So I quit vacuuming the carpet. I came home the other day and my husband had a push mower in the living room and he said he hated that carpet and the strings hanging out and he was going to mow it. MOW IT! What an idiot. I threatened to leave him and he just pulled the starter chord harder. Finally he stopped, but how do I get that carpet clean if I can’t vacuum it?
Answer. Ask the manufacturer how to clean it. Some type vacuum cleaners might be okay to use. Of course, the manufacturer has probably gone out of business by now. Some experts say you may need to rake shag carpeting with a carpet rake. Most experts seem to agree that the trick is to keep it clean in the first place by vacuuming every week or so and getting the carpet steam cleaned annually. Shag carpets are hard to keep clean.
