Look It Up!

Cleaners New York

Question. New York, NY - Ricky, my son has a band and plays the drums. He also smokes. In fact everyone in his band smokes like a freight train. While they’re playing their eyes roll up into their heads like they’re smoking zombies or something. The problem is the ceiling tile in our family room got so dirty from all that smoke, we couldn’t get it clean and so we painted it. Well, everything looked fine except here’s the problem. That tile used to absorb some of the sound! Now since we painted it, all that bongo music just bounces all over the house like a ball in a racket ball court. We’re going deaf. How can we get that tile to absorb again? Should we hire a cleaner?

Answer. I don’t think you, or even one of those professional cleaners, would be successful at removing the paint from that tile. You’ll need to replace it–the tile, not the paint. Paint can cause acoustical tile to lose its sound proofing qualities. It may also be detrimental to the tile’s fire rating. Some other possibilities include ear plugs, ear muffs or a garage sale which offers a drum set for sale. You could have one of their practice sessions raided by a team of Navy Recruiters.
