Janitor San Antonio
Question. San Antonio, NM - Last year when our janitor went on vacation our whole office area started to stink. As usual our janitor is leaving to spend two months in southern France again this year. Before he left he told us that we should pour some water into the drains in his cleaning room to avoid sewer gas odor. What’s going on? Did he rig it to smell when he’s gone just to have job security?
Answer. According to the pros, sink drains have something called a P-trap. It’s that part of the drain that bends back up and is shaped like a “P”. The idea behind the P-trap is that it holds water in it and that water prevents odors from seeping back up and out the drain. If a drain sits idle for a long time the water in the P-trap might evaporate and let the sewer stink come right up and out and head straight for your nose. So your janitor is just giving you heads up that since he’ll be gone for quite awhile, you need to keep some water in that P-trap.
