Question. Atlanta, GA - My brother Frank lives alone and it’s no wonder. He smells like mold. My husband thinks he also smells like mildew. Our younger sister thinks he smells like both. I don’t know if his house is damp or if he doesn’t wash his clothes or what. I think that someone must have recently said something to Frank because now he is really piling on the English Leather. My sister and I are going to sneak into his house when he is not home to wash those clothes. Will just washing them be enough to get rid of that moldy smell?
Answer. The experts say that hanging them out in the sun and fresh air might help. When you wash them be sure to use cool water. They say that hot water can make that moldy smell more or less permanent. For clothes that are made so that colors won’t fade as a result of washing (colorfast) you can add a couple of cups of hydrogen peroxide to some cool water in your wash machine and let the clothes soak for awhile before washing. Whatever you do it is best to let them dry in the sun rather that throwing them into a hot dryer.
